Marcus (Jonathan Majors) works as a hospital orderly while pursuing his dream of becoming a musician. He’s constantly torn between responsibilities and aspirations.
The day begins with Marcus oversleeping after a late-night gig. This triggers a cascade of mounting problems throughout his shift.
His supervisor threatens termination after multiple tardiness incidents. His car breaks down on the way to pick up his daughter from school.
Marcus’s ex-wife Helena (Tessa Thompson) is unsympathetic to his struggles. She questions his ability to co-parent effectively given his unpredictable lifestyle.
During his hospital shift, Marcus forms an unexpected connection with Mrs. Robinson (Regina King), a terminal patient with a celebrated past as a jazz singer.
